“So, what do you want?” she asked. And the first time in my life I am really thinking about what I actually WANT. Not what I think what I SHOULD do, or what would be the best option. Not what seems to be worth striving for nor what others want for me. I am thinking about that life, that I envision for myself, for us. And doesn’t take long to realise that it’s the first time, I’ve never done this before and I can’t believe that all this time I was chasing something that I have no idea about, nor could I name it. I only know what I DON’T want anymore. And suddenly I realise that this is not an easy task as I start putting my dreams into words.
Today, 3 years later I am asking myself this question again and again, so I don’t lose track of where I am heading. It is such a powerful question and although it takes a little while to get through it. Maybe it’s uncomfortable, maybe it’s something you were hiding for years. But it is so worth to uncover.
Before you even think about selling or taking a new direction, you should start with the biggest of all questions: What do you want? How does this life you are dreaming of look like, feel like? What does it mean? Who you are with? It’s the destination you set once you made it through the mud. It’s the direction you are heading and it’s the goal you are chasing. No, sorry to disappoint you, but a goal is not a number, it’s not just the amount of money you make or the super fancy bookings you have. Your goal should be much more bigger than that, there is more to that than just your numbers. It’s how you want to FEEL, who you want to be and what you want to BECOME. The numbers and what you want to achieve are just milestones on your way, they are just RESULTS of your actions that you take. But they will never fulfil you, they will never make you any richer or happier.
So no matter what you believe what should be your goals, it all starts with you. And it starts with the courage to answer the very first question you should ask yourself that is the core of why you started. “What do you want?”
Because WHAT you achieve might be something that is similar to others, but because of completely different reasons. But you will only get the results when you know what you want and where you are heading. Imagine you get in the car and start driving and you might end up back at where you started because you don’t know WHERE you are going. So ask yourself first: “What do you want?” – It all starts with you.
